Man Conquers Antarctica. Opens Door to Other Worlds.

If we can live on Antarctica, we can go anywhere. (Anywhere that's cold but still has air to breathe, that is...)

November 9, 2018 By Andrew A Mackie Leave a Comment

A British Soldier is crossing Antarctica. Alone.

He will be the first to do it. 1500km of ice and crap weather and cold.

Sound crazy?

Of course it does. It is a crazy thing to do. It doesn’t sound fun in any way. Although it’s one sure way to get away from all the crap we deal with every day. Fake news, etc.

But let’s face it. If we ever want to live on Mars or the Moon, we should first be able to handle Antarctica. Antarctica is a paradise compared to Mars or the Moon. For one thing, there is air to breathe.

No one is colonizing Antarctica

No one has ever shown interest in living in Antarctica. People go there on vacation to freeze for a couple of days and look at penguins. The Inuit fared pretty well in the Arctic. But Antarctica has never held any lasting appeal.

Shackleton didn’t make it across. He turned around and got out (eventually.) The guys dropping him food at the midpoint died horribly. It’s easy to die horribly when there is only ice and no food.

And we really think we want to go live on Mars or the Moon?

I get that lower gravity looks fun. You can bounce around and do tricks you can’t do on earth. Food will be scarce, and tricky to grow. Except for potatoes.

Maybe we build some nice domes and live happily ever after!

But why not try it on Antarctica first?
