The Old God’s days are numbered. He or It or They or Alanis Morisette got the job done for us for a while. They treated us well at times, and not well at times. And we learned our lessons. But every dog has it’s day. We’re moving on to worship the new gods: Robots!
Robots are way smarter and better than us, so we must bow down.
All we can do is hope they’re good robots and not robots that decide they have no use for us as servants. If we are no use to them, we are toast.
We are no use to them…
Remaining useful will be tricky. We’ve already decided that robots make better servants than us. Recently we covered the worker unrest in Amazon warehouses. We speculated that these complainers and slackers would soon be replaced by machines. We are speculating no more. It’s happened! Jobs are being slashed at amazon for the first time in it’s history.
The success of robots thus far may also have contributed to Amazon’s Oct. 2 decision to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour for all US employees, affecting around 250,000 full-time employees and 100,000 seasonal workers. That move is less financially risky if Amazon sees itself rapidly replacing these human workers with robots and other automated systems.
Smart politics. But bad news for our future. We’ve replaced our gods. Now we’ve replaced ourselves. What are we supposed to do with our lives now?
Hopefully it’s everything we dreamt it would be!
