I’m with a friend in San Francisco. Making dinner for us and them. Why not? It’s the least I can do.
Nothing crazy. Pasta, sauce, salad, whatever. I get the ingredients at this or that grocery store. I set up in the kitchen and get to work. The friend gets back partway through and notices a small transparent bag on the counter.
‘Did you just buy Bay Leaves?’ he asks.
Obviously I did. They were sitting right there, in the bag.
He points out the window at a tree in the yard. It’s a Bay Laurel.
Not only does it have Bay Leaves growing on it, but it’s possibly the biggest, leafiest tree I’ve ever seen. It has so many bay leaves on it that everyone I’ve ever met or will ever meet can delicately season soups and sauces for their entire lives.
Yes, I’m the idiot.
So pay attention. Know stuff about the world around you, and you can save yourself from a mistake like this.
KNOWLEDGE IS KING!
Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance is ignorance. And it can cost you a few dollars here and there at the grocery store, along with the opportunity to eat freshly picked foods.
