It’s a big news story these days. Everyone is talking about Amazon. They love it. They hate it. They shop there.
Bezos makes lots of money. He doesn’t pay his warehouse workers the same wage he pays himself. Everybody freaks out. Whatever! Also, he makes them do a healthy round of calisthenics to warm up their muscles before getting down to work. And they set productivity targets to encourage people to work hard. ‘It’s a hellscape,’ say the employees.
(‘It’s actually going by really fast today.‘ I overhear an employee at my local supermarket tell a fellow employee. It’s a race to the end, for her. Is that a good way to live? I try to make my days go as slowly as possible. But that’s another story…)
Automation is the future
The real surprise here is that he still has humans that work for him. Why is that? Don’t you think that by now he’d have automated all this? It would be more profitable. No one would need to worry about the working conditions, or the pay structure.
People could get paid a basic income to stay home and not work. Days will go much more slowly when we watch Netflix all day. This is great news! You shouldn’t sit back and let life zip by! That’s not what the future promises us.
The future will soon be real. Mark my words.
Will it make us happy or sad? WE DON’T KNOW!
But at least we won’t have anything to complain about. Although they might make robots so smart that they complain NON-STOP! (and then take things over and turn us into human batteries. But that’s a ways down the road. So don’t even WORRY ABOUT IT!)
